The modern punk rock group Titus Andronicus recently performed at the SPACE Gallery in Portland, Maine, in a concert that also featured Brenda and Dinowalrus. Even though the concert was held on a Tuesday evening, the 8pm show played to a packed crowd. Brenda started off the show with a set of '90s-inspired alternative rock. Dinowalrus, led by a former member of Titus Andronicus, took the stage next.

Their sound is a style of synth-heavy dance rock somewhat reminiscent of British bands like The Klaxons. This livened up the crowd and got people moving ahead of the main act. The five-member NJ band Titus Andronicus is fronted by Patrick Stickles, who put on an impressive show as he howled with rage at the modern world with lyrics that dealt with themes like depression and alcoholism. He was backed up by the band's powerful guitar riffs as they moved between high-energy rock and sorrowful ballads.

The modern punk rock band Rise Against have mastered the art form of anthemic punk rock, and on the Chicago band's sixth album, Endgame, they come across as being very pissed off in the best of ways. Lead singer Tim McIlrath portrays himself as an "orphan of the American dream", as he rants about various social ills from environmental collapse, to economic inequality and teen suicide.

The powerful lyrics are poems dedicated to unanswerable evils, and they unfold atop a mix of Bad Religion hardcore, metal-guitar action and modern-rock balladry that is evolving into a very popular form. In fact, Endgame is the third Rise Against disc produced by Bill Stevenson of the pop-punk legends the Descendents. Still, all of this success has clearly not done much to brighten McIrath's view of the world. He continues to crank out modern masterpieces that speak to the disenfranchised and victimized like the searing hurricane Katrina-themed song "Help Is on the Way".

In 2000s, an era of post-punk and alt-pop set in motion. The post-grunge movement proved a memorial to Nirvana and sounds of the past, a new crop of bands revolted with unabashedly pop-y, hyper-melodic sounds, paying honor to their diverse roots without simply repeating past styles and designs. Gibson.com debuted in 2010 list, but it breaks down this year's Top 10 Modern Rock Bands.
